We report a new spin manipulation protocol for periodically reversing thesample magnetization for Magnetic Resonance Force Microscopy. The protocolmodulates the microwave excitation frequency synchronously with the position ofthe oscillating detection cantilever, thus allowing manipulation of the spinmagnetization independent of both magnetic field gradient strength andcantilever response time. This allows continuous variation of the detectedsample volume and is effective regardless of spin relaxation rate. Thisenhanced flexibility improves the utility of MRFM as a generally applicableimaging and characterization tool.
